M1 Garand

From Medal of Honor

The M1 Garand is a gas-operated semiautomatic rifle designed by John Garand and accepted by the military in 1936. However, due to shortages, the Garand wasn't completely in the military until 1943. The Garand served throughout WWII, Korea and the early stages of the Vietnam War. The M1 was replaced by the M14 in 1957, which was essentially a 7.62x51mm NATO M1 Garand with a detachable 20-round magazine and could fire in fully automatic.

In Allied Assault, the M1 Garand is the Allies' main battle rifle. It can kill an enemy with two torso shots or one headshot, making it pretty effective. The only downside is that the game version of the M1 can only be reloaded after the clip is empty, which is historically incorrect as the real M1 Garand is easily reloadable at any time by means of the clip ejection button on the left side of the receiver. In addition, a loud ping sound is made after the empty clip has been emptied. If you're going into a somewhat dangerous area and you have a few rounds left in your clip, you can only finish it off and waste the ammo to reload. As opposed to ejecting the clip and save the ammo as you would in reality.

[edit] Historical Note

Soldiers tended to reload their M1 rifles before hitting the last two rounds in order to avoid the dreaded "Ping" noise the empty tin clips made. Though not recommended by field manuals, in the field, G.I.s often went about fighting with the M1 the way they preferred, it was almost instantly found that mid-clip reloading was much more convenient than firing till empty, the benefits of mid-clip reloading included: saving ammo for partial loading later, not giving your position away by firing off rounds into the ground, avoiding the "ping", and lowering your chances for a jam.

The M1 Garand was simply reloaded mid-clip by pulling back and holding the operating rod with the heel of your right hand , then reaching over the receiver with your thumb and pressing the clip release button on the lower left side of the receiver, the clip will then eject up into the shooters palm, allowing him to save it for a partial load later, with the rifle clear of all ammo, the shooter would then insert a fresh clip and resume firing, this process took about 3-4 seconds in the hands of a trained soldier.

Exactly the same as the one in Allied Assault, only it has a bayonet attached to it and it's rare to find in single player, first appearing when you defend Henderson field. It is a 1 shot kill to the torso, chest, and head.
