MG42

From Medal of Honor

The MG42 is a 7.92x57mm-firing machine gun developed by Germany. Due to Germany's losses in the Eastern Front, the MG42 was made out of simpler metal stampings and pressings compared to it's predecessor, the MG34, so that it'd be easier to manufacture. In addition, the MG42 has an excessively-high firing rate of 1200 RPM. Because of this, the barrel could easily overheat. To somewhat counter this, a simple quick-change system for the barrel was designed.

The MG42 was designed to fire from a bi or tripod. On a bipod, the MG42 could rattle and shake from the bullets being fired, and even some rattling was reported with the tripod. Some soldiers put extra sandbags on the bipod to somewhat negate the rattling.

After the war, the MG42 was reborn as the MG1, 2 and MG3 for the Western Germany army. Rechambered to fire 7.62x51mm NATO, the MG3 has a lower rate of fire, but a buffer can be added to bring the firing rate back up to that of the original MG42.

[edit] In-game

In Allied Assault and it's expansions, the MG42 can be fount mounted at select spots during levels. The in-game MG42's firing rate isn't nearly as fast as it's real life counterpart, but it still packs a punch and has infinite ammo. Make sure you can use one whenever you get a chance, as it's very effective at wiping out enemies from an area! It is the most common heavy machine gun found in all games compared to the Jeep-mounted Browning machine gun and is very deadly should the player find it in enemy hands.

The weapon can be seen in pillboxes, sandbag positions, bunkers, tanks and even armoured infantry carriers among German lines. Interestingly, when the player mounts a MG42, he usually encounters a large number of enemy soldiers charging towards the machine gun.
