Medal of Honor (MOH) is the name of a series of first-person shooter games set in World War II. The first game was developed by DreamWorks Interactive (currently known as EA Los Angeles) and published by Electronic Arts in 1999 for the PlayStation game console. Medal of Honor spawned a series of follow-up games including multiple expansions spanning various console platforms and the PC and Apple Macintosh.

[edit] Plot

The Medal of Honor series puts the player in the shoes of an Allied combatant during World War II, with weaponry appropriate to the time period. The games are characterized by linear gameplay through recognizable WWII-era areas of conflict, which is sometimes presented in a cinematic tone (e.g., inspiration from modern films like Saving Private Ryan, "The Thin Red Line" and Enemy at the Gates and the television miniseries Band of Brothers is obvious, since the game was 'created' by Steven Spielberg).

In the later games in the series, the artificial intelligence (AI) of the enemies and fellow soldiers have been notorious for being slightly below or average by current FPS standards. The violence is mostly bloodless and simple, usually consisting of elaborate animations. Later games (ones after and including European Assault) have had blood spatters, and more realistic death animations. However, Medal of Honor: Frontline (pre European Assault) has realistic death animations, but no blood spatter.

The latest games, Medal of Honor Airborne, and Medal of Honor Heroes 2 began talking about missions such as the Invasion of Sicily, Operation HUSKY, Operation AVALANCHE, and other attacks of the Italien Campaign. Medal of Honor Airborne and Medal of Honor Vanguard began touching upon Operation NEPTUNE (which is pretty much Normandy, Operation MARKET GARDEN, and Operation VARSITY, Invasion of Germany 1945. Medal of Honor Airborne however takes it a level farther and has Der Flankturm. Der Flankturm is a ammo depo in Essen, Germany where this big Flak Tower is dominates the center of the city. After these series of battles, World War II was said to be over as the Russians/Soviet Union in the Battle of Berlin took the Berlin capital and raised the Soviet Union flag over the German capital building. This battle was depicted from Medal of Honor Allied Assault.

In the Pacific front, Medal of Honor Rising Sun and Medal of Honor Pacific Assault were the only games that depicted the Pacific War. Medal of Honor Rising Sun showed the famous Attack on Pearl Harbor along with Medal of Honor Pacific Assault. Medal of Honor Pacific Assault had missions like the Battle of Tarawa and Makin, while Rising Sun had battles such as the Phillipines and Singapore. Both games had the Battle of Guadalacanal.

[edit] Controversy

In Germany, the MOH series is a controversial video game because of its delicate subject matter (WWII). The game is uncensored in terms of flags, and the swastika can often be found. This conflicts with German laws which state that the swastika may only be used in historical references. The game was put on the index of youth endangering media by the German BPjM in 2000, making it only available for people over 18; advertising for it had to be discontinued.

[edit] Gameplay

The gameplay originally focused on behind-enemy-lines intelligence gathering, or some other type of special missions, placing emphasis on using false papers and silenced pistols, but as the series (and the technology) has progressed, it has shifted emphasis towards front-line combat, and has now almost completely abandoned the original focus. The existence of false papers ended with Frontline.
